  1. A description of plant leaves or stems that
  2. exhibit patches of different colours. The
  3. term is usually applied to plants that show
  4. white, cream, or yellow on their leaves,
  5. caused by areas of tissue that lack the green
  6. pigment chlorophyll. Variegated plants are
  7. bred for their decorative value, but they are
  8. often considerably weaker than the normal
  9. all-green plant. Many will not breed true and
  10. require vegetative reproduction. The term is
  11. sometimes applied to abnormal patchy
  12. colouring of petals, as in the variegated
  13. petals of certain tulips, caused by a virus
  14. infection. A mineral deficiency in the soil
  15. may also be the cause of variegation.
